There are 3 main techniques to decode regular words in Phonics Instruction:
- SOUND IDENTIFICATION
* What is the first sound that you hear in (....SNAKE...)?
* What is the final sound that you hear in (....GRASS...)?
* What is the medial sound that you hear in (...CAT...)?
- SOUND SEGMENTATION
* How many sounds can you hear in (...DOG/SNAKE/DUCK...)?
- SOUND BLENDING

There are also three main techniques that can be used to teach "tricky words" or irregular words:

- Say it as it sounds
For example pronounce "mother" so that it rhymes with "bother"
- Mnemonics
"People Eat Omelletes People Like Eggs" to spell the word people.
"Laugh At Ugly Goats Hair" to spell the word laugh.
